Air aware: Breathe easy

Hello, I'm Liya, a highschool student from Almaty, Kazakhstan. This website aimed to raise the awareness about air pollution in Almaty. Some diseases are influenced by poor quality air, as a result people suffer from asthma and skin related diseases. Learn how it affects health and how we can make a difference. Together, let's create a cleaner and healthier environment for all.

What is the problems?

Problem, current situation:

Kazakhstan has experienced considerable economic growth in the last two decades, mainly due to the export of fossil fuels and metals, but it has also undergone many years of environmental degradation because of of the poor management of its significant natural resources. (Assanov et al., 2025) According to IQAir.com, Kazakhstan's most polluted city for 2024 was Karaganda. While Chu has been recognized as the cleanest city of Kazakhstan.

Learn more by visiting Air Quality Index official site.

In comparison, Copenhagen, Switzerland was ranked the cleanest city in the world in 2024, with an air quality index 6, according to IQAir. Karaganda was ranked as third most polluted city in 2024, according to IQair. Karaganda is well known city for burning coal and fossil fuels. In 2024,  Karaganda recorded an annual average PM2.5 concentration of104.8 µg³, while the world's most polluted city, Byrnihat, India, had an average concentration of 128. µg/m³. Why this is happening?

The graph 1 shows the higher concentration of air pollutans during winter, becase of need to heat up buildings, especially the older buildings. Also, coal combustion and fossil fuel combustion are the cheapest electricity generators compared to renewable energy sources. The Geographical location of Almaty provides the understanding of air pollution in this region. Almaty is located in the foot of Trans-Ili Alatau. Hence, the city is surrounded by mountains and hills, this location prevents horizontal movement of air. (Lars Carlsen, Bulat N. Kenessov,Nassiba Kh. Baimatova*, Olga A. Kenessova 2013). Temperature inversion is a weather phenomenon, which occurs in Almaty due to geographical location. Since Almaty lies in a valley, the bowl-shaped terrain traps cold air in the surface. Warm air lies above the cold air, preventing cold air to rise. While cold air that is locked between ground and warm air trap air pollutants near the surface, the  air pollutans such as Sulfur dioxide ( SO2), Carbon monoxide (CO) and Particulate matter (PM2.5 PM10) build up on each other, worsening the air quality. During winter, sutuation becomes worse, because the nights last longer, it allows ground to cool efficiently. Eventually, coal combustion plants and car emissions are the major contributors to air pollution. Air pollutants such as Sulfur dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen Oxides (NO) contribute to respiratory illnesses and worsen them.

On January 14th, around 5 pm, Almaty was in the first place with an index of 256 which as clarified as "very dangerous for health"

What is the impact on a health?

Most of the air pollutants are respiratory irritant and can trigger illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstuctive pulmonary disease (COPD),Pulmonary respiratory disease.

Air pollution can worsen skin-related disease such as acne, atopic dermatitis.

What are the causes

Gas emissions from motor vehicles. Almaty is also well known for its traffic. Therefore, traffic congestion contributes the most to the poor air quality.

Heating building influences air pollution since many facilities rely on boilers or stoves that burn natural gas  (mathane) or coal. When natural gas is burned, it releases carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O). Carbon dioxide is also considered as a greenhouse gas influencing global climate change.

Coal power plants. There are three major coal power plants stations: Almaty-1 , Almaty-2, Almaty-3. Click here to see their locations and operating capacity. (link)
